Senate asks Customs to return rice ‘seized’ in Ibadan markets

The Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges on Tuesday directed the Nigeria Customs Service to return the luggage of rice and cash which its officers allegedly seized lately from some outlets within the Oja Oba market in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Officers of the NCS had final week invaded the market and carted away eight truckloads of rice and cash discovered within the outlets of the affected merchants.

The panel then requested the Comptroller Common of Customs, Hameed Ali, represented by his Assistant Comptroller Common, Garba Mohammed, to make sure that the seized items had been returned to the affected merchants inside two weeks.

Members of the panel had been unanimous of their condemnation of the NCS, insisting that its motion was a breach of the Customs Act and the Government Order signed by former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in 2007.

The laws empowers the company to solely impound smuggled items, 40 kilometers radius to the border.

The Chairman of the panel, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, recalled {that a} comparable string operation carried out by the NCS in Katsina State led to the dismissal of the officer, who led the operations.
